One of the reasons that I use Facebook is to see what my friends — both old and new — are doing from time to time. I recently read a post from Michelle MacPherson talking about how Facebook changed its default setting for News Feeds. The News Feed is what you typically see when you log into your Facebook account. The default setting is to NOT show all the posts from your Friends and Liked Pages. So, I created a video to show you what I mean and how to fix it (if you want)…

To me, I like seeing all the posts from everyone, not just the people that I interact with the most. If someone gets out of line then I’ll consider hiding those posts on an individual basis like I show in the video.

Please share this information and video with those that you consider friends that you want to keep in touch with. Let me know if this was helpful with a comment.

A friend recently “tagged” me in a Facebook post so that it notified me about his post about me. I had already heard about the possibility of doing that, but I never really looked into it until I saw him use it.

As usual, it’s not real difficult to do. I read that to tag someone on Facebook, you put an @ sign in front of the person’s name much like you would on Twitter. A simple example would be “I’m meeting with @John Smith at Starbucks.” So, the post would show up on my Facebook Wall, but my friend John Smith would also have it appear on his Wall.

Well I tried this once, and it didn’t work. I was puzzled why not? So, I did a little more digging online and saw that you have to wait for Facebook to create a dropdown menu after you type in the @ sign and begin your friend’s name. I think at the time of my first trial run, my computer was running slow so the dropdown never appeared.

Anyway, I did another test by bugging some of my more active Facebook friends in a single post. Should hear back soon. I also tried it with a Facebook Page, but it didn’t work again. It just gave me some apps to tag rather than people who have Liked the page.

Mashable did an article about Facebook Tagging back in September 2009. Yes, I’m behind the times a bit.

Well, it’s been over two years since I wrote on my blog, and honestly, I’m not sure I’ll make that many posts unless I really think about doing it. Being a private person and having a very public blog, even though I’m not sharing all THAT much, sometimes is difficult to reconcile.

But, now that my company ILN Enterprises is going in a more public direction, I think it’s time to restart-slash-reboot my personal blog so that I can have a voice outside the company that may be interesting to people. At the same time, I believe that everyone will have to eventually maintain their online reputations. A blog is one web presence that anyone can access and potentially be a main source of online expression. Transparency will be even more important going into the future. For those intensely private people, it will become more and more difficult to keep your personal information under wraps. It’s better to embrace the technology and actively project what you are about and who you are.

For my personal blog, I may completely revamp the blog to better suit my organizational style now that I know more about blogging, search engine optimization and the technical world of websites. So, if one day the theme completely changes and the posts are rearranged, please don’t be surprised.

I haven’t put an entry in my blog for about a year now…so why not restart with a big announcement…

I’m Engaged!

I proposed to Natasha Phan on July 2, 2008 after meeting her on the internet about 3 years ago. She’s amazing and I couldn’t have found a better person to share the rest of my life.

But this post is about the engagement. I had a small window of time when I thought I could surprise My Sweetheart. I really rushed to setup everything. My original plan was to propose at my house in the great room with a bunch of flowers placed around the room with rose petals on the carpet.

Then, I figured that since I would have to propose at night after Tasha came home from work, that I’d make a romantic dinner. I only know how to make one “fancy” dish Chicken Madiera. But that meant that I had to setup a table, with a nice setting, candlelight and plenty of mood. Yikes! I had a lot to do. But it was fun…

Here are some pictures…

Coffee Wisdom

A group of alumni, all highly established in their respective
careers, got together for a visit with their old university professor. The
conversation soon turned to complaints about the endless stress of work and
life in general….

Offering his guests coffee, the professor went into the kitchen
and soon returned with a large pot of coffee and an eclectic assortment
of cups: porcelain, plastic, glass, crystal – some plain, some expensive,
some quite exquisite. Quietly he told them to help themselves to some
fresh coffee…

When each of his former students had a cup of coffee in hand,
the old professor quietly cleared his throat and began to patiently
address the small gathering…

”You may have noticed that all of the nicer looking cups were
taken up first, leaving behind the plainer and cheaper ones. While it is
only natural for you to want only the best for yourselves – that is
actually the source of much of your stress-related problems…”

”Be assured that the cup itself adds no quality to the coffee.
In fact, the cup merely disguises or dresses up what we drink. What each
of you really wanted was coffee, not a cup, but you instinctively went
for the best cups… Then you began eyeing each other’s cups….”

”Now consider this: Life is coffee. Jobs, money, and position
in Society are merely cups. They are just tools to shape and contain Life,
and the type of cup we have does not truly define nor change the quality of
the Life we live…”

”Often, by concentrating only on the cup, we fail to enjoy the
coffee that God has provided us… God brews the coffee, but he does not
supply the cups. Enjoy your coffee!”

The happiest people DON’T HAVE the best of everything; they just
MAKE the best of everything… So please remember:

Live Simply.
Love Generously.
Care Deeply.
Speak Kindly.
Be Happy!

I’ve only read about half of the book The 4-Hour Work Week, but I’m already ready to declare that it will have a profound and life-changing effect on me.

The book sucked me in being that Timothy Ferriss is a Princeton grad and fellow enterpreneur. He’s younger than me and has accomplished many more cool goals than me. Very sobering. Yet even with great envy, I feel real good about life right now.

The outsourcing section of the book gave me such insomnia. I finally feel like I can go after ALL my dreams and bring all my projects to full realization.

Moments of clarity are rare and exhilarating! I stayed up the whole night thinking of all the tasks I can outsource and how much time that will feel up. I’ll be able to concentrate on the tasks that I want to do rather than those that I have to do.

The Elimination and Automation sections of this book are MUST READS. Get this book! Better yet go to Audible.com, sign up for the monthly membership. You can download an iTunes version for $7.95.

The Platinum Rule

Like almost EVERYONE, I’m a self-centered person. But, I try not to be.

I see in today’s society (at least in the US) a prevailing sense of entitlement
and self-centeredness. It’s really all about ME.

For example, people drive oblivous to the fact that other human beings are driving other cars. I’ve seen people pull U-turns in the middle of a busy street stopping traffic. Cutting people off has been a problem that’s grown.

My pet peeve is the non-signaler. I can’t stand it when someone is SO lazy

that they can’t signal which way they’re going to turn. Being into efficiency –

I have to wait until they start to turn before I can go – See self-centeredness in both me and the non-signaler?

That can be a whole OTHER post…

What I wanted to discuss here is how to approach customer service and in general how to interact in business with proper respect in this self-centered age.

I call it the Platinum Rule.

The Golden Rule that has stood the test of time I think is still a momumental

first step that we should stick by…

Treat Others As You Would Like To Be Treated

But in business I would go a step further and use the Platinum Rule:

Treat Others As They Would Like To Be Treated

It’s not really an earthshattering concept. “The customer is always right” has

been around for decades. But I think it goes further in the sense that

sometimes customers are searching for answering outside of the scope of right

and wrong.

It takes intuition and market research to figure out the Platinum Rule.

Sometimes you’re going to be flat out wrong in approach. You can always fall

back on the Golden Rule as a safety net.

Here’s the point…it gets people in business thinking about how others think. Putting yourself in other people’s shoes. It’s not done enough.

I personally wish it could be done a lot more not just in business. So, I’m putting it out there. Maybe it gets through to a few shields of self-centeredness down the road.

I went to pick up Chinese take-out this evening to find that a number of people were milling about outside the AT&T-Cingular Store with sleeping bags, camping chairs, blankets, etc.

It seemed like the beginnings of some sort of rally, when I realized that tomorrow ushers in the new Apple iPhone! Technophiles rejoice! One day of sublime delight to get your hands on new technology. Don’t let the slobber ruin your Wii.

But back to camping out…I have camped out for only two reasons in my life: 1) Camping; 2) to get good seats at ACN International Training Events. Both are fun and rewarding in their own way. And I guess the enrichment I get from communing with nature, spending time with friends, family, and acquaintances, and pouring goodness into my mind compares to those that camp out for iPhones – barely…

How can you camp out for a THING?! For $499 and up?!

It’s actually rather ironic that I spent the same amount to start my ACN business a while back. I camp out with the team for an event that will inspire and train people how to become successful instead of for a little star trek communicator. Difference here is that the team and I have the opportunity to get paid ON iPhones, not just pay for iPhones.

So, I love iPhones! Just not going to camp out for one…
